History of Conservation in Clay County

The Clay Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) was organized June 21, 1945.  The original supervisors were: 

  • Obert Grover, Glyndon
  • Hugh Trowbridge, Comstock
  • O. E. Studlien, Moorhead
  • Norman Elton, Hawley
  • William Mikkelsen, Glyndon

In 1945, 7 major land area problems were outlined:

  1. Drainage
  2. Wind Erosion
  3. Drought
  4. Proper Land Use
  5. Water Erosion
  6. Weed Control
  7. Water coming down from other areas

In our 2000 Annual Plan, 11 major areas of concerns were listed:

  1. Wind Erosion
  2. Water Erosion
  3. Water Quality & Conservation
  4. Promote Conservation & Resource Programs
  5. Promote Energy Conservation
  6. Promote State Revolving Low Interest Rate Loan Program
  7. Improve Wildlife Habitat
  8. Improve Grassland Management
  9. Reclaim Mined Land
  10. Promote Special Projects
  11. Implement EEO & Civil Rights Responsibilities to maintain strong working relationships with other agencies and organizations
