How to Produce Less
Household Hazardous Waste

Waste (HHW)
Solid Waste
Management
-
The
best method of managing Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is to
prevent its generation in the first place. This involves selecting the least toxic item “to do the
job” and buying only the minimum amounts necessary.
Buying in large quantities is not a bargain if half of it has
to be discarded.
-
If
you can not use it up, be certain to store the remaining product
according to the instruction on the label.
Then, be sure to use that old product before you purchase new
products for your next project.
You might also consider giving the leftovers to others who
may be able to use it. Check
with friends and neighbors to see if they might be able to use it.
-
Use
safer alternatives to hazardous products - they often cost less than
the more hazardous products, too!
If there are no alternatives, choose products with labels
that say “caution” or “warning” over those that say
“danger” or “poison”.
-
Choose
water based products when available (i.e. latex, water based paint
stripper). Look for the words “clean-up with water” or
“protect from freezing” on the label.
