How do I prevent the flu?
3 important things to remember to prevent the
spread of H1N1 and the seasonal flu are:
- Cover
your cough with a tissue or your sleeve – don’t use your
hand. This will spread germs onto surfaces you touch after
coughing.
-
Washing your
hands often. Use soap and water – this is the best way to
kill germs. Make sure to wash your hands for 20 seconds.
-
Stay home –
if you have flu symptoms, don’t go to work or school. Keep
your kids at home if they might have the flu. Adults may be
able to infect others up to 7 days after getting sick.
Other helpful tips:
-
Clean
surfaces – like door handles, handrails, kitchen tables,
etc. – frequently with household cleaner or bleach solution
(mix ¼ cup bleach with 1 gallon of water to make bleach
solution). If disinfectant is not available, hot water and
soap can also be used.
-
Avoid
touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread
when a person touches something that is contaminated with
germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
-
Do not share
eating utensils or drinking glasses with someone else.
-
Avoid close
contact with people who are sick.
-
Practice
other good health habits. Keep yourself strong – and more
resistant to disease – by getting plenty of sleep, staying
physically active, managing stress, drinking plenty of
fluids and eating nutritious food.
-
Get
vaccinated for seasonal influenza and the H1N1 influenza.
