Map of Minnesota with Clay County identifiedClay County comprises 673,759 acres or 1,053 square miles.  The county is 36 miles long and 30 miles wide.  

Neighboring counties include: Norman County to the north, Becker County to the east, Otter Tail and Wilkin Counties to the south, and the North Dakota county of Cass to the west. 

There are 7 villages in Clay County.  They include Kragnes, Downer, Rustad, Dale, Rollag, Averill, and Baker.

There are 11 incorporated cities in Clay County.  They include Barnesville, Comstock, Dilworth, Felton, Georgetown, Glyndon, Hawley, Hitterdal, Moorhead, Sabin, and Ulen.

There are 30 townships in Clay County.  They include
Alliance, Barnesville, Cromwell, Eglon, Elkton, Elmwood, Felton, Flowing, Georgetown, Glyndon, Goose Prairie, Hagen, Hawley, Highland Grove, Holy Cross, Humboldt, Keene, Kragnes, Kurtz, Moland, Moorhead, Morken, Oakport, Parke, Riverton, Skree, Spring Prairie, Tansem, Ulen, and Viding.  For information on township officials, view the County & Township Officials list.

Clay County's population has doubled from 25,227 people in 1940 to 51,229 in 2000, which is a 102.2% increase.  The population increased 3.9% between 1980 and 2000 and is projected to increase 4.4% from 2000 to 2025.  The City of Moorhead is the most populated city, with 32,177 residents.  

The median age in the county is 32.3 with 12,822 ages 17 and under and 6,597 over 65.  

Clay County maintains a 94.6% rate of owner occupied housing, compared to 91.7% statewide.  The poverty rate for Clay County, in 2000, was 12.4%, compared to the state average of 8.9%.

The Bureau of Economic Analysis listed the 1990 per capita personal income for Clay County at $14,051.  This increased to $18,407 in 1996, which was a 31.0% increase over that time.  The per capita personal income for the state of Minnesota increased 32.6% statewide and there was a 27.4% increase nationally.  The average weekly employment wage for Clay County in 1997 was $387.88 and the monthly employment increased by 3.5%.

Clay County is fortunate to have a variety of industries, including agricultural and educational.
